Abstrakt		In spite of sophisticated and precise diagnostic methods, the physical examination of the patient has remained the basis for the clinical diagnosis of the disease. In the cardiac status the evaluation of the apex beat is particulary important. In classical medical literature only information about the characteristics of the apex beat in the supine position of healthy adults can be found out, although the best palpation of the apex beat is achieved in the extreme left lateral position. Our study was aimed to determine the character of the apex beat in the extreme left lateral position. In the second part of our study we determined the character of the apex beat in patients with left ventricular enlargement (left ventricular dilatation). We evaluated the diagnostic attributes of the apex beat width and the apex beat location, its precision and accuracy in detecting left ventricular enlargement. We also wanted to determine the relation between the location of the apex beat, its size and dimensions of the left ventricle. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
