Abstrakt     Some adverse transfusion reactions can be prevented or minimized by the removal of sufficient numbers of leukocytes from blood components using leukoreduction filters. Adhesion of leukocytes to platelets activated by adherence to the fibers is the supplemental mechanism that can improve the efficiency of leukocyte removal from fresh erythrocyte concentrates or fresh whole blood. Fiber filter media for leukoreduction of platelet concentrates (KT) is designed not to bind and activate platelets. Recent studies showed that platelets activated during preparation and storage of platelet concentrates can adhere to filter fibers. Our hypothesis is that leukocytes can bind to platelets that are already adhered to filter material because of previous activation, which can improve the efficiency of leukocyte removal by filtration also from the platelet concentrates. The aim of the study was to determine wether the efficiency of leukocyte removal from KT depends on degree of platelet activation in KT. To confirm our hypothesis we compared the efficiency of leukocyte removal by filtration in two groups of 40 units of platelet concentrates. In the first group (KTPK), platelet concentrates were prepared manually from whole blood and contained a higher portion of activated platelets per unit. In the second group (KTTF), platelet concentrates were prepared by apheresis and contained a smaller portion of activated platelets per unit. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
