Abstrakt     Individual data on hospital treatment because of injuries and poisoning (episodes) can be shown in various ways. Hospital treatments of an individual patient can be shown in four different ways depending on the method used to combine episodes: hospitalisations (aggregated episodes), hospital treatments (aggregated episodes) by specialisation, - hospital treatments (aggregated episodes) by diagnose, - hospital treatments (aggregated episodes) by specialisation and diagnose. If we combine all episodes for a patient who has been treated in hospital, we get hospitalisation. Similarly we can combine all episodes for one patient within the framework of an individual specialisation and we get a collection of episodes aggregated by specialisation. For an objective representation of hospital morbidity and length of stay because of individual disease, we also combine episodes with regard to the main diagnosis. If the patient has had several treatment episodes in one hospital and the main diagnosis was the same in all episodes, the patient appears several times in this collection of hospital treatments. Therefore the number of episodes aggregated by diagnose is usually higher than the number of hospitalisations. Aggregation of episodes by diagnose is possible within the framework of the hospital and also within the framework of an individual specialisation. When combining episodes we always start from the basic collection of data (collection of episodes), and therefore the number of hospitalisations is not necessarily equal to the total number of hospital treatments within the framework of individual specialisations. In 1999 there were 32,422 hospitalisations due to injuries or poisoning, of which 29,967 were first-time hospitalisations. The average length of stay was 7.5 days in the case of injuries and 4.7 days in the case of poisoning. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
