Abstrakt     The ambrosia plant genus originates from southern North America where it is successful in dry climates, on sandy soil, and steppe-prairie conditions. Forty two taxa are known, most are American. The only European species, Ambrosia maritima, is found in Mediterranean regions, growing on sandy dunes. All other species have been brought to Europe. The family is particularly well known as its pollen is highly allergenic.
