Abstrakt | Understanding of the hearing mechanism has progressed through three main epochs. The first was dominated by von Helmholtz's view that the basilar membrane acts as a spectral analyser by mechanically sustaining externally driven standing waves. The second was dominated by von Bekesy's experimental results showing that incoming sound produces a spatially confined hydro-mechanical travelling wave with the loca- tion of maximum amplitude defined by the frequency of the incoming signal. The pre- sent epoch began in the 1970s with a wide array of experiments and theoretical studies demonstrating thal von Bekesy's travelling waves are locally amplified by an electro- mechanical process in which the outer hair eelis, because of their motility, function as both sensors and mechanical feedback elements. | |
