Abstrakt     The amount of salicylic (SA) and gentisic (GA) acid was measured in leaves of differently susceptible cultivars of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) to potato virus Y ntn. After the infection of very susceptible cv. 'Igor" with PVY ntn local necrotic lesions and eventually sistemic symptoms appeared. In contrast, after infection of tolerant cv. "Pentland" and extremely resistant cv. "Sante" with PVY ntn, they show no local or systemic symptoms. The level of SA and GA was measured with high pressure liquid cromatography (HPLC). In the cultivars examined there was a high contens of SA: between 0,04 and 0,08 ug/g fresh weight of free SA, and between 0,4 and 2,2 ug/g fresh weight of conjugated SA. In winter series of plants the endogenous gradient of SA, but not GA was present (more SA in younger than in older leaves). In cv. "Sante" free GA was not detected. In other cvs. there was between 0,1 and 0,3 ug/g fresh weight of free GA. Cv. "Igor" contains 2 ug/g fresh weight, cv "Pentland" 5 ug/g fresh weight and cv. "Sante" 1,5 ug/g fresh weight of conjugated GA. It seems that the high basal levels of SA and GA do not show any correlation with resistance to PVY ntn, indicating that SA nor GA play a role as a constitutive defence compound. Despite some statistically significant differences in the amount of SA and GA measured 24h after the infection with PVY ntn in cvs. "Pentland and "Sante" we assume, that their resistance to the pathogen is associated with other defence mechanisms and not with increased levels of endogenous SA. In various time points after infection in susceptible cv. "Igor" there were some differences in levels of SA in GA detected. In our oppinion they are too small to induce the resistance. Five to six days after the infection, when primary symptoms on the susceptible cv. "Igor" developed, there was no difference in level of SA or GA between healthy and infected plants.
