Abstrakt     Based on the data of the Slovenian National Cancer Register, there were 212 cases of malignant mesothelioma diagnosed in Slovenia between 1961 to 1997. The aim of the study was to find out if there were clusters of cases of malignant mesothelioma around asbestos sources. The aim of the study was not to calculate the causal relationship between the mesothelioma and asbestos source (plant or waste landfill). If we would like to do this we should have excluded exposure to any other source of asbestos fibres. The observed asbestos sources were plants that have been using asbestos in the past and waste landfills as second potential sources. Arc View GIS information system enabled to present cases of malignant mesothelioma together with the asbestos sources on the same map. The results of the study showed the excess number of cases in small areas around sources of asbestos. The power of association between cases of malignant mesothelioma and asbestos sources seems the strongest where the locations of industry and waste deposits were located in close area. 90% of all cases of disease were located within 5-km centroids around plants and waste landfills. Undoubtedly, there is a very strong association between disease cases and the plants; namely 65,7% of all mesotheliomas were located within 5-km centroids around industrial sources of asbestos. In the study we observed the clusters of mesothelioma also in places we did not expect to find them. The cases were located near industrial plants where asbestos has not been not used for production. On the basis of the findings we suggested several measures mostly to promote knowledge about the risk of being exposed to asbestos as well as knowledge about proper handling of asbestos products and asbestos waste material in general population.
