Abstrakt     This study compared the efficacy of the amoxycillinlclavulanic acid combihation with standard therapy (cotrimoxazole, cefaclor, nifurtoinol) for urinary tract intections in children. Fortysix children aged between one month and seven years were randomly assigned to receive either Amoksiklav (22) or one of the comparative agents (24). The Amoksiklav-treated group included 15 patients with primary and 7 with recurrent urinary tract infections and the control group included 19 patients with primary and 5 with recurrent urinary tract infections. Treatment was continued for 10 days. Very good and good clinical response was achieved in 86% children treated with Amoksiklav compared to 96 % of those receiving the comparative agents, which is not a statisticatly significant difference. Amoksiklav was very well tolerated, side effects being reported in three patients compared to two in the control group. Due to excellent in vitro susceptibility of urinary pathogens (mostly E. coli); high clinical efficacy and good tolerabtlity, the amoxycillin/clavulanic acid cambination may be considered a drug of choice for the treatment of urinary tract infections in infants.
