Abstrakt     The authors discuss the intermittent Lake Cerkniško jezero which is a world famous karstic pheno- menon. The processes in this unique ecosystem are regulated by the water level fluctuations. They are irregular and depend on precipitation. The important feature is an undefined large watershed with its karstic character of the lake region and the majority of its tributaries. During six-year monitoring of the lake and its tributaries data on water quality parameters were collected. The concentrations of total phosphorus and total nitrogen were relatively high in the tributaries as compared to the lake. A similar situation was observed comparing the concentrations of coliform microorganisms at different locations. Results of monitoring revealed that during the flood the extended reed stands, which cover the majority of lake area function as an efficient sink for nutrients, but in the dry period the area becomes a potential source of nutrients, due to intensive mineralization.
