Abstrakt     Background. Delivery of a preterm baby is associated with neonatal mortality, severe neonatal morbidity with long-term consequences and problems in neurological and mental developments of the child. Prevention of preterm delivery is one the primary yet also one of the most difficult tasks of perinatal medicine; thus having thorough knowledge of epidemiology of preterm delivery in Slovenia and in various Slovenian regions is of key importance. Our aim was to find the trend of incidence of preterm delivery in the period 1986-1999 in Slovenia as well as in each of the 14 maternity hospitals. Our additional aims were to calculate the mortality and morbidity rates of preterm infants and analyse protential risk for preterm delivery factors with regard to recent pregnancy. Methods. In this retrospective analysis we used the data from the National Perinatal Informational System of Slovenia. In the perioid 1986-1999 there were 768915 deliveries, and we calculated the incidence of preterm deliveries for the country and separately for each maternity hospital. Additionally, we compared the incidence of preterm delivery with regard to the onset of labour: spontaneous with contractions or with preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PROM) vs medically indicated delivery (elective cesarean delivery, induction of labour) occurring in the 10-year period 1987-1996 (221033 deliveries) with the respective percentages occurring in the period 1997-1999 (52908 deliveries). The neonatal mortality and morbidity rates were determined with respect to gestational age, whereas the neonatal mortality rate was determined also with regard to the onset of labour, the analysis taking into account the data for the whole country in the period 1997-1999. We determined the stillbirth rate, perinatal mortality rate, early neonatal mortality rate and the mortality rate due to congenital anomalies. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
