Abstrakt     Abstract-Background. Due to their immaturity, premature babies experience many difficulties. In the following paper, we shall emphasize interventions during birth of premature babies of 32-34 weeks of gestational age (observed group). Material and methods. The overview of literature about difficulties affecting premature babies of the stated gestation age is presented. Relevant data are selected from the National Perinatal Information System (NPIS) of Slovenia for 1999. Comparisons are made between the incidence of specific cases in the entire population and in the observed group. Results. Among the 17589 children born in Slovenian hospitals in 1999, 310 children were born at the gestation age of 32-34 weeks (1.76%). In the observed group, we noted an unsatisfactory reliance on gestational age determination, 10 times more frequent repture of membranes, 3 times more frequent cesarean section, nearly 3 times more SGA babies, 10 times more frequent multiple pregnancies, lower Apgar scores, nearly 3 times more frequent use of various resuscitation techniques, and nearly two thirds of children that needed to be transported. Three quarters of these children needed additional forms of baby care, and up to 7 times more frequent interventions after birth. Inborn defects were 3.5 times more frequent than in the general population, as well as any diagnosis at discharge. Ultrasound head examination was performed in nearly one third of the babies in the observed group. We found pathological results in 8% of the children in the observed group. Breastfeeding was less successful. Mortality was 10 times higher than in the entire population. Conclusions. The group of children with the gestational age 32-34 weeks experience all the difficulties which are typical for premature babies. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
