Abstrakt     Background. Neural tube defects (NTD) occur as a consequence of disturbances in the process of NT closing, which is going on between the 16th and 27th day of embrional life. The most common defects are spina bifida and anencephaly. It is well known that supplementation of folic acid in the time of conception and during the first three months of gestation reduces defects of neural tube up to 70%. The purpose of this work is to ascertain the acquaintance of Slovenian pregnant women and their gynaecologists with the supplementation of folic acid and actual during pregnancy. Methods. In the first part of my work a questionnaire was sent to a certain number of gynaecologists. An inquiry among 500 pregnant women in the first five days after giving birth was the second part. These women were hospitalised between Number 1, 1999 and February 15, 2000 at the Department of Perinatology, Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ljubljana. Results. Questionnaires were returned in 70% (153). The majority of gynaecologists are well informed of folic acid mainly through professional literature. They inform their protegees, but only 19% of women visit the gynaecologist before conception. According to their opinion about 48% of pregnant women are taking folic acid in pregnancy but only 15% of them are taking folic acid correctly-already in the time of conception. About 79% of the questionned pregnant women knew about folic acid, but only 7% were aware of the benefits of supplementation. 52% of them were taking folic acid during the last pregnancy. Before conception folic acid was taken by 27% of them. That means that only 14% of all pregnant women took folic acid correctly. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
