Abstrakt     According to the expression of three MHC gene transcripts five fibre groups (beta, beta/2a, 2a, 2ax, 2x) and a minor population of negative type I fibres, expressing none of MHC transcripts, were demonstrated in our previous study of human skeletal muscles. This finding led us to assume that an unknown MHC transcript might be expressed in these negative fibres and that eventual more frequent appearance of negative fibres in human muscles would support our hypothesis. Thus, the aim of present study was to further determine the frequency and character of negative fibres analysing the expression of beta, 2a and 2x MHC transcripts within histochemical type I, IIC, IIA, IIAX and IIX fibres in several different human skeletal muscles. In the present study only 0.8% of all analysed fibres were negative, more than half of these negative fibres appeared as type I and the rest as type IIA and IIX. Therefore, our present results imply that so scarce negative fibres are rather the result of fibre type transformation than fibres expressing an additional MHC transcript.
