Abstrakt     A total of 131 endodontic operations involving root canal preparation with a dowel were performed at the Department of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery in Ljubljana in the year 1992. Fortythree teeth were evaluated by clinical examination and radiography eight years after the procedure. The operations on these 43 teeth were carried out by different surgeons. The indications for the procedure were chronic periapical periodontitis (33 cases) and radicular cysts (10 cases). On follow-up clinical examination, the history was obtained and the periapical area was examined for tenderness to percussion or palpation and for the presence of a fistula. The periapical radiographs were analysed according to Rud's classification. Clinical examination showed absence of abnormalities in 79% of the teeth. Radiography revealed complete healing (category A) in 60% of cases, healing with fibrosis (category B) in 28%, and inadequate healing (category D) in 12%. The results of this study should be regarded as provisional since the number of teeth available for evaluation was too small to allow a definitive appraisal of the method.
