Abstrakt		The principal object of this contribution is to present the biology and ecology of Neptis sappho based on the results of the monograph by TIMPE and TIMPE (1993). During an excursion to the county of Burgenland in September 1998, the first author (D.J.) was able to study the feeding behaviour of the larvae in nature, skilfully guided by the expert Walter TIMPE. A section is dedicated to the shaggi structures at the end of the proboscis which enable the imagines of N. sappho to suck up droplet-shaped food from surfaces of leaves by dabbing. The last part of this work is dedicated to the actual distribution and threats to the survival of N. sappho in eastern Austria, based on detailed studies carried out mainly by H. Hoetingerr. Data on the distribution of the species in Slovenia and the threats it faces there were provided by R. VEROVNIK and F. REBEUŠEK. G. SALA gives some information about the situation in NE. Italy.
