Abstrakt		The process of discovering new antibiotic substances is illustrated by the development of the betalactam group. Numerous observations of antibiosis had to wait for an adequate state of the art in science and technology, making feasible the isolation of antibacterial compounds from natural and atificial culture media. The case of benzylpenicillin is used to explain the strategy in detection of antibiotics, the semisynthesis of new compounds and the development of pharmaceutical forms suitable for the intended application route. Antibiosis between microbes and multicellular organisms is illustrated on the example of the magainin group of peptide antibiotics. The practically unlimited access to new semisynthetic peptides promises to yield numerous candidates for clinical evaluation. The perspective in the control of bacterial infections rests with the prudent use of antimicrobials.
