Abstrakt     A questionnaire was distributed amongst 288 primary care physicians in Ljubljana region to find out whether they were aware of the thrombolytic treatment of acute ischemic stroke, which is practised by the Neurology Clinic in Ljubljana since 1997. Responses were received from 127 physicians. According to the findings, it would seem that almost all of them (93%) are aware of the treatment, but only 48% of them have an excessive knowledge of how to recognise a patient who is suitable for thrombolytic treatment and what further actions they need to take in line with the generally accepted guidelines (protocol) of the clinic. The lack of knowledge stems from the fact that 63% of the physicians very rarely encounter acute stroke patients (less than one patient per month). Because most of the emergency cases including acute stroke are handled by the emergency medical service. Most of the respondents however believe that this kind of treatment has a promising future and feel the need for keeping their patients, peers and other contacts well informed of further developments.
