Abstrakt     The structure and function of terminally differentiated superticial cells of the urothelium lining the normal urine conducting system is, except in the urinary bladder, poorly understand and reveals the specificity of different regions of the urinary tract. The main function of the urothelium is to maintain the blood-urine permeability barrier conditioned by presence, localization and special organization of the urothelium differentiation markers as asymmetrical unit membrane (AUM), uroplakins and cytokeratin 20 (CK 20) and by distribution of actin filaments, as well as by junctional proteins (E-cadherin, occludin), that seal the space between adjacent superticial cells. Therefore the presence and the localization of molecules that determining terminally differentiated urotehelial cells and the barrier function of the mouse urinary tract, were analyzed by immunohistochemical and immunocytochemical methods. Further more, we also investigated the immunohistochemical localization of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), as their possible role in the urothelium and its relation to the urothelial differentiation is still not clear. We also examine proliferating activity. Our results showed that terminally differentiated superticial urothelial cells along the urinary conducting system are different. There was also a specific expression of iNOS, while in the renal pelvis high proliferating activity was noticed. Two basic types of superticial urothelial cells were found. In stratified three cell layers thick urothelium of the renal pelvis, in ureter, in urinary bladder and in proximal prostatic urethra the superficial urothelial cells were indicated by the presence of the apical asymmetrical unit membrane (AUM) plaques, uroplakins and CK 20 and by the basolateral distribution of actin filaments.
