Abstrakt     All three chlamydia species can cause a heart infection such as endocarditis, myocarditis or pericarditis. Chlamydia psittaci is a well-established cause of culture negative infective endocarditis and pericarditis and very rarely causes myocarditis. Chlamydia trachomatis is a known cause of endocarditis and can cause myocarditis in young infants. No known cases of pericarditis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are described in literature. It seems that Chlamydia pneumoniae is an important cause of myocarditis especially in healthy young adults; it also causes endocarditis and pericarditis. The real incidence of chlamydial heart infections is not known. The diagnosis presents a major problem since direct proof of chlamydial infection by culture or PCR method is rarely possible and the causal relationship is established mainly with serological diagnosis. Since chlamydiae are potentially curable cause of inflammatory heart disease the microbiological diagnosis of chlamydial infection should be included in the routine diagnostic workup of patients with myo/pericarditis and in selected cases of culture-negative infective endocarditis.
