Abstrakt		The paper describes categories of causative factors for the development of disability in old age and the tasks to be performed in order the goals of its rehabilitation. In rural areas (in which 60% of elderly persons live) the attainment of rehabilitation goals meets with serious difficulties due to shortages of rehabilitation facilities and professionals. In order to enable elderly persons to return to their homes after a disabling event, and to assist them to continue living there, at least partially independent, a variation of the World Health Organisation model of Community-based rehabilitation should be applied in countries in Centra/Eastern Europe. This variation could consist of delivey of rehabilitation with resources available in the community, provision of appropriate assistive technology devices and adaptation of the immediate environment.
