Abstrakt     The toxicological laboratory of the Institute for Forensic Medicine performs analyses of mainly biological materials, largerly for the needs of forensic toxicology, clinical toxicology and traffic in the republic of Slovenia. Since 1991 the work load on the laboratory has increased by more than 600%. The reason lies in an increased use of psychoactive substances, especially drugs, in Slovenia. The Law on Road Safety prohibits driving under the influence of drugs, psychoactive drugs or psychoactive substances. A driver is considered to be under the influence of such substances if the presence of such substances in his body is established by means of special agents, equipment or professional examination. In the laboratory, we mostly analyse urine samples, and, if necessary, blood samples as well. When analysing urine for drugs, first immunochemical screening methods are applied. To confirm positive results, a combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry is employed. The later is used for determination of pschoactive drugs and quantitative analysis. The paper gives a statistical survey of research undertaken with people involved in traffic in the year 2000, the basic analytical approaches and the expected direction of development of toxicological analyses at the Institute of Forensic Medicine.
