Abstrakt     It was discovered, that the initial carious lesion develops under a relatively intact superficial enamel layer. It is evident that transport of ions and molecules through the pores in the enamel structure plays an important role in the caries process. Knowledge of the transport processes in deciduous enamel during root resorbtion is limited. The data about the effect of devitalization of the teeth on diffusion processes in enamel offer no definitive conclusions. In this study the transport of water soluble spin-labelled molecules through enamel was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and the amount of water in enamel was determined by measuring the weight during drying at room temperature. Enamel samples cut from single rooted permanent and deciduous teeth were classified into four different groups: (A) samples from deciduous teeth, (B) samples from deciduous teeth with terminal root resorbtion, (C) samples from permanent teeth of younger patients, (D) samples from nonvital teeth and (E) samples from permanent teeth of older patients. A set of diffusion coefficients (D) to describe the molecular transport in enamel was generated from the experimental data. For groups of enamel samples this coefficients were: D(A) = 10,72 +- 2,83 x 10-7 cm2/s, D(B) = 3,22 +- 0,66 x 10-7 cm2/s, D(D) = 5,75 +-0,28 x 10-7 cm2/s, D(E) = 4,45+-0,37 x 10-7 cm2/s. The average contents of free water (W) in groups of enamel samples evaluated by the changes in weight loss after drying the samples at room temperature for 60 minutes were: W(A) = 6,03+- 0,62%, W(B) = 2,04 +- 0,16%, W(C)=4,02+-0,70%, W(D)=3,82+-0,67%, W(E)=3,16 +-0,71%. A decrease in the permeability of deciduous enamel for water soluble spinlabelled molecules during root resorbtion could be observed. The average diffusion coefficient in a group of permanent vital teeth was found to be larger than in a group of permanent nonvital teeth. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
