Abstrakt     Personal response systems operate in all western countries, including Slovenia. They are primarily used by vulnerable older people or service providers concerned for their welfare. The limitation of such systems is that they are 'passive'. Contact with a response centre can only be established when devices are activated by the older person in question. New systems are, however, being developed which can continuously monitor an older persons well-being and ensure speedy interventions when these are necessary. By this means, more frail older people can be supported in the community with moves to institutional care avoided.
