Abstrakt     Seamen are a special group of workers, who perform their duties on a ship in a group of 18 to 20 persons. They are usually 6 to 7 months absent from their homes. They are often on open sea for several weeks and have only short stops in ports. While working are exposed to various burdens. They are threatened from infectious diseases and them from malaria, sexually transmitted diseases, acute respiratory infections, infectious diseases of the intestinal tract and hepatitis. Between 1994 and 1998 60 seamen working for Splošna plovba Portorož yearly searched for health assistance because of infectious diseases and 4 to 5 seamen yearly searched for health assistance because of malaria. Majority of malaria cases were found out in Africa. There are differences between deck service and other services on board in searching for medical assistance because of malaria, but with chi-squared distribution method no statistically important differences were detected. 18 seamen workng for Splošna plovba Portorož yearly searched for health assistance because of sexually transmitted diseases. Majority of cases were found out in Asia. With chi-squared distribution method was established that seamen in deck service searched more frequently than seamen in other services for health assistance because of sexually transmitted diseases (p < 0,05).
