Abstrakt     In year 2000, we studied breeding density and influence of mowing on breeding success of the whinchat (Saxicola rubetra) on Ljubljansko barje. Densities up to 10 breeding pairs / 10 ha were found on abandoned meadows, dominated by Filipendula ulmaria, followed by extensive meadows (one and two times mowed per year) with 2 to 3 breeding pairs / 10 ha. The density on intensive meadows (three times mowed per year) was below one pair / 10 ha. On abandoned meadows the first whinchats started to breed in the middle of the April, the last ones in the middle of the May. On extensive meadows, whinchats commence with breeding on average 9 days later as on abandoned meadows. On extensive meadows about 1/3 of the nests were destroyed by mowing, while on intensive meadows 2/3 respectively. Percentage of nests under threat for being run over by mowing machine was the highest between 7th May and 28th May on abandoned meadows, and between 15th May and 6th June on extensive meadows respectively. Delay in haymaking time reduce mowing frequency per year, influencing quantity and quality of the fodder. If we are to keep the number of livestock, the area of intensive meadows should be increased by factor 1,39 if converted to two times mowed and by factor 2,36 if they are converted to one time mowed meadows. On the other hand, an immediate subsidy of 98.778 SIT/1 ha/year would be necessary, when converting three times mowed meadows into two times mowed ones, or 121.713 SIT/1 ha/year when converting two times mowed meadows into one time mowed, or 220.492 SIT/1 ha/year for converting three times mowed meadows into one time mowed ones.
