Abstrakt		Infections with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is the most severe epidemiological problem in hospital environment throughout the world. In the clinical microbiology laboratory of the Institute of Public Health Celje the prevalence of MRSA in the General Hospital Celje has been followed since 1989 and in more detail since 1993. In the year 2000 2638 strains of S. aureus were isolated from 1261 patients and 1001 strains of MRSA from 268 patients. In 63 patients MRSA was isolated only from surveillance cultures. 16,26% of patients with S. aureus isolated from clinical samples were MRSA positive. The number of MRSA positive patients per 100 admissions was 0,57. The the situation in highrisk areas of the hospital improved, by contact isolation of positive patients, screening of patients on admission and by implementation of other preventive measures.
