Abstrakt		Surgical treatment is the mainstay of the therapy of differentiated thyroid carcinoma and part of multimodal therapy of anaplastic carcinoma. The purpose of surgical treatment of suspicious tumor is to establish the diagnosis, whereas the purpose of surgical treatment of carcinoma is to resect the tumor and the whole thyroid gland. The extent of surgical procedure depends on type of tumor, prognostic factors, patients age and tumor stage. The smallest possible extent of resection in diagnostic purpose is extra-capsular lobectomy with isthmectomy on the side of the tumor. Nowadays, the majority of American and European endocrinologic surgical oncologists elect to perform total or near total thyroidectomy.
