Abstrakt     Remediation of the City of Zagreb Jakuševec Dump Site, one of the largest dump sites in Europe, is in progress. Protection of existing well field in that area from the horizontal flow of leachate from the dump site; Petruševec on the left bank and Velika Gorica and Črnkovec on the right bank of the Sava river, is considered one of the priority problems for the development of the city and nearby villages. First model of constructed wetland has been built in Croatia for determining the purification ability of leachate from the first section of the Jakuševec Dump Site, as well as their polishing in the lagoon. Results from the yeast toxicity test (YTT) showed that leachate is not acutely toxic for the yeast and that it contains biologically degradabile organic matter in greater quantities. According to the reed growth in the basins with vertical flow of the constructed wetland model, symptoms of cronic toxicity may be noticed. Laboratory experimental results show positive effect of higher temperatures on efficiency of Jakuševec landfill leachate purification. Laboratory experimental results of the purification of leachate using aquatic macrophytes show that increasing the concentration of ammonia in leachate, decreases the efficiency of it is elimination. In all series of experiments, significantelly greater elimination of ammonia and orthophosphates has been obtained in the planted microcosms, than in the unplanted microcosms. For treatment of wastewater in the lagoon following species may be recommended: Phragmites australis, Myriophyllum verticilatum, Ceratophyllum demersum, Lemna minor and Salvinia natans. Model of constructed wetland for purification of leachate from Jakuševec landfill has been planted with reed (P. australis). (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
