Abstrakt     Results of some studies indicate that quantitative measurement of the blood flow in the umbilical vein could be more sensitive in prediction of fetal growth retardation as well as neonatal morbidity and mortality in comparison to analysis of flow velocity waveform in the umbilical artery. Classical method of Doppler blood flow measurement with uniform insonification has never been generally accepted in clinical practice because of high demands on ultrasonic equipment, skilled personel and rather time consuming procedures. Some of these problems could be overcome if color Doppler were used to display the flow in the umbilical vein and concurrently calculate the blood flow velocity. For this purpose, we decided to use the Aloka SSD 350 ultrasound scanner which calculates the blood flow velocity after displaying the flow in the vessel by color Doppler and setting the Doppler angle. The width of the color band corresponds to the vein diameter. In order to evaluate the new approach, the results of the volume flow in the umbilical vein calculated from these data were compared with values from two studies in which the classical Doppler technique was used. Umbilical venous blood flow in 53 healthy pregnant women referring for routine ultrasound examination during the last trimester of pregnancy was measured using color Doppler technique. Pregnant women were divided into four groups according to the gestational age. After diplaying the umbilical vein in free floating umbilical cord by Doppler color flow mapping, the Doppler angle was set and vein diameter and blood flow velocity were measured at several portions of the vein. Using these data, blood volume flow and blood flow per kg of estimated fetal body weight were calculated. (Abstract trunacted at 2000 characters).
