Abstrakt     Effects produced by microcystins on different strains of cyanobacyeria and green algae have been studied in low light condition in vitro in order to imitate the conditions in cyanobacterial blooms. Microcystin producing and non-producing Microcystis aeruginosa strains have been used in these experiments. A significant increase in cell volume of both cyanobacteria and green algae has been observed when exposed to microcystins. The treated cells have also shown a rise in the content of photosynthetic pigments per cell as well as per cell volume unit when grown in the microcystin environment. We have concluded that the increase in biomass and the rise in phytosytnthetic pigments triggered by the presence of microcystind are adaptions that enable producing cyanobacteria to carry out photosythesis in spite of limiting light conditions in the bloom.
