Abstrakt     The present work focuses upon the breeding of Erebia styx and E. stirius, both distributed through the eastern Alps. E. stirius was reared during 1996/97 from living stock originating from Slovenia (Mt Raduha, Savinja valley) and E. styx in 1999/2000 from the Lake Garda region (Toscolano valley). These studies aim to verify the specific differences in the larval stages found by Lorković (1952) with regard to the morphology of the ovum, the larva and the pupa as well as the development of the larvae of both species. The present results agree with those obtained by Lorković except in relation to the larval development of E. styx which manifests differences depending on the region of the origin and the altitude. This species forms populations with larval development becoming complete after one year and others with biennial development (Ofen Pass, see LSPN 1987). One part of the annual populations hibernates as L1-larvae, as described by Lorković, and confirmed in the course of a supplementary culture carried out during 2000/01 with living stock from the Trenta valley (SLO), whereas the other part of the annual populations hibernates as L2 or L3 larvae (Lake Garda region). An introductory chapter provides a rough outline of the nomenclatural and taxonomic alterations relating to the two species from the first of published drawings. Moreover, the type localities are defined more precisely and the results of the studies are presented by D.J. The whereabouts of the type material of both species and of the additional original voucher specimens of styx, caught and dispatched to various entomologists at the beginning of the 19th century by Henry Escher-Zollikofer of Zurich, are dealt with.
