Abstrakt     Surgery is an established method of treatment of patent ductus arteriosus. Percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus is becoming an increasingly widespread alternative to surgery. Several different types of occluders were clinically evaluated for the percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus and important drawbacks were found in all of them. Therefore, there is no consensus regarding the most appropriate method for the percutaneous closure of patient ductus arteriosus. In recent years, coils have been the most widely used occluders for the percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus. Results of our work confirmed that coils are the most suitable occluders for the percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus with a minimal diameter <2 mm. The multiple coil occlusion technique is necessary for closure of patent ductus arteriosus with a minimal diameter >2 mm. However, the multiple coil occlusion technique has several important drawbacks. Coil embolisation is frequent. In infants and small children, stenosis of the left pulmonary artery was occasionally detected due to the large number of implanted coils. In some patients with a large minimal diameter of patent ductus arteriosus, complete closure was not achieved, even after implantation of several coils. Fluroscopy time, which is roughly proportional to the number of implanted coils, is therefore long using the multiple coil occlusion technique. According to the results of our work, residual patent ductus arteriosus after surgical ligation represent a special type of patent ductus arteriosus. Usually, the minimal diamter of patent ductus arteriosus after surgery is <2 mm. Patent ductus arteriosus after surgical ligation is most often narrowest at the junction with the left pulmonary artery. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
