Abstrakt     The doctrine on treatment of drug addicts was confirmed by the Health Council of the Ministry of Health in the Republic of Slovenia in 1994. After inter-ministry confirmation of guidelines of the methadone maintenance programme, a network of Centres for the Prevention and Treatment of Drug Addicts was set up. In order to contribute to the transparence and higher quality execution of the methadone maintenance programme, the author sets the target of establishing the extent or spread of the methadone maintenance programme, its implementation, elements of quality, trends and defining the satisfaction of those in the programme. In order to achieve the aims, the author distributed a questionnaire to all those included in the methadone maintenance programme in April 1997. Five hundred and twentyfour of those in the programme responded to the anonymous questionnaire, which is 72% of all those included in the programme. The author thus obtained data on some of the biological characteristics of participants (sex, age), social position (marital status, number of children, employment, education), and data on the start of drug-taking, on the start and duration of inclusion in the methadone maintenance programme, on psycho-socio-therapeutic treatment and other important information, including their expectations of available treatment programmes. The answers show that 80% of those included in the methadone maintenance programme in 1997 were men. The average age of those included in the programme was 25.5 years. The average age at the start of taking illicit drugs was 17.4, and the first banned drug marijuana. Those on maintenance were better socialised, felt better and were involved in school and work.
