Abstrakt     The aim of the study, which was carried out at the Neurosurgery Department of Clinical Centre in Ljubljana, was to measure the Functional Independence in the early phase of rehabilitation of patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage. Fifty-nine patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage, which was the result of ruptured intracranial aneurysm, were included into the twelve month study. All patients had been operated. A questionnaire was used to obtain basic demographic data. The clinical conditions before operation were measured by Hunt-Hess scale following by neurological check up and measurement of orientation abilities after the surgery. Functional independence was assessed by Functional Independence Measure ( FIM ), and the cognitive state by Slovenian version of Mini Mental Independence Examination ( MMSE ). The achieved results showed a low average age of studied patients ( 52 years ) and a high percentage of employment at the time of subarachnoid haemorrhage. Staying in bed was short ( 20 days on average ). 47.8 % of patients were dismissed. A complete independence at daily activities was noticed in 23 patients (41,8%) at dismissal. The analysis of the achieved results showed that the measurement of functional independence and cognitive state in patients at dismissal and documenting of obtained data were necessary. FIM proved to be a useful measure. Despite good motor conditions in most patients ( 79 % with no motor deficit ) cognitive part of FIM and achieved values of MMSE showed the presence of deficit in higher mental functions ( memory, attention ), which significantly affected their independence. Therefore, the clinical psychologist should be included in the period of early rehabilitation. Counselling to the relatives and patients for further (psychological ) diagnosis should be based on more detailed neuropsychological diagnosis.
