Abstrakt     Background: The dietary intake during lactation may affect the health of the mother and the infant. This pilot research was conducted to examine the adequacy of the diet of lactating women in Slovenia. Methods: Healthy lactating Slovenian women (n=34) at 1-3.5 month post partum participated in the study. Dietary intakes were assessed by prospective 7-day weighted dietary protocols and evaluated with the software Prodi 4.5 expert plus (Stuttgart, Germany). The results of analysis were compared with the central European reference values for nutrient intakes (D-A-CH, 2000). Results: The reported diet of lactating Slovenian women in our study is hypocaloric. The proportion between macronutrients is adequate, whereas the intake of dietary fibre is below the D-A-CH recommended values. The ratio between saturated: monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats was 2.6 : 2.2 : l, a high intake of saturated fats and low intake of polyunsaturated fats. The intakes of several minerals (Mg, Fe, I and F) and vitamins (A, D, E, Bl, folic acid and vit. C) are below recommended values. Conclusions: Women in Slovenia consume a diet, which deviates markedly from advisable intakes. Efforts should be met to provide mothers with the necessary information for achieving the recommended nutrient intake.
