Abstrakt     The aim of the present article is to present novel findings in the field of thyroid physiology with special emphasis on iodine metabolism. Slovenia is one of the endemic goitre areas, where a higher prevalence of autonomy is expected. In 1999, new recommendations concerning iodine content in salt were adopted. An epidemiological study evaluating the results of increased iodine content in salt is in progress. On the basis of preliminary results and indirect parameters we can conclude that iodine prophylaxis is effective. The main cause of iodine excess is amiodarone, which accumulates mainly in the fat tissue, from where it is slowly released. For this reason the iodine content in the organism is high even a few months after stopping treatment with amiodarone. Together with the thyroid autonomous tissue this is the reason for hyperthyreosis due to iodine excess, therefore special precaution is necessary in using this drug in our region.
