Abstrakt     The arficle discusses a program of physical therapy for persons after amputation. The program helps the amputee to achieve the highest level of independance. It is devided into pre-operative program of physical therapy, immediate post-operative treatment, preparation for the prosthetic fitting and prosthetic gait training. Pre-operative program id dependent on the person's abilities to cooperate, which in turn is dependent on the pain he or she is experiencing and his or her psychophysical condition. The aims of the pre-operative program are: - to prevent post-operative chest complications - to teach isometric muscle contractions in preparation for future functional activities - to assist in prevention of deep vein thrombosis in the remaining leg by means of foot and ankle exercises - to encourage the functional use of muscles and joints by independent bed mobility of daily living - to practice transfering, if possible , Post-operative physical therapy starts žimmediately after the operation in order to avoid complications such as muscle weakness and joint stiffness caused by prolonged inactivity. The goals of the early post-operative treatment are: - to encourage deep breathing and coughing in order to prevent chest complications - to reduce stump pain and the pain in the remaining leg - to provide stump care with soft dressing technique in order to protect and support the stump and to counteract the development of edema - to prevent the development of contractures by controlled positioning (stump positioning, prone lying, wheelchair sitting) - to maintain and increase muscle strenght and to improve balance by means of an exrcise program - to encourage independence by teaching transfer procedures (chair, toilete, bed) - to begin with early controlled ambulation with walking aids (parallel bars, walkers).
