Abstrakt     Psychiatric services in Slovenia continue to face many challenges despite considerable changes since the independence in 1991. Two main priorities are implementation of the recently proposed "Patients Advocacy Act and Protection of Rights of Mental Patients Law," and related development of community psychiatric services which are currently almost non-existent. The former would allow patients with mental disorders in Slovenia to finally get their advocates. The latter would provide services that are more needs-oriented, assertive, continuous and local. These services focus particularly on the extremely high suicide rate that goes in line with high rates of alcohol-related psychiatric and physical disorders.
