Abstrakt     Diabetic retinopathy is a complex disease trait, which appears to be due to interaction of multiple genetic and environmental factors. In the association study a relationship between the aldose reductase (AC)n gene polymorphism, the 4G5G plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) gene or the insertion/deletion (I/D) angiotensin 1 converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphisms and the development of diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes was studied. One hundred and twenty-four subjects with type 2 diabetes with diabetic retinopathy were compared to 80 diabetic subjects without retinopathy with diabetes duration of more than 10 years. Eight alleles of the aldose reductase (AC)n gene polymorphism were detected: Z+6, Z+4, Z+2, Z, Z-2, Z-4, Z-6, Z-8. The patients with diabetic retinopathy had an increased frequency of the Z-2 allele compared with the patients with uncomplicated diabetes (39.1 % vs. 27.5 %, p=0.016, x2=5.8). Additionally, the patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy and the patierits with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy had increased frequencies of the Z-2 allele compared with the patients with uncomplicated diabetes (proliferative diabetic retinopathy: 38.9 % vs. 27.5 %, p=0.03, x2=4.45; non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy: 39.4 % vs. 27.5 %, p=0.04, chi2=4.1). The patients with diabetic retinopathy did not have statistically significant lower frequency of the Z+2 allele than the patients with uncomplicated diabetes (11.3 % vs. 15 %, p=0.27, chi2=1.2).
