Abstrakt     Hypothermia is one of the causes of cardiac arrest in a younger group of patients without co-existing cardiorespiratory pathology. Recognition of vital signs and differentiation between life and death can be difficult in hypothermia. Severe hypothermia can cause lethal arrhythmias and even cardiac arrest; on the other hand, however, hypothermia may protect brain and other vital organs from consequences of prolonged circulatory arrest. Resuscitation, rewarming and continuous monitoring of core temperature have to be performed simultaneously. Principles of basic and advanced life support apply also to the hypothermic patient in cardiac arrest provided that specificities regarding altered pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, response to electrostimulation, cardioversion, and defibrillation are considered and that caution is taken during invasive procedures and handling of the patient.
