Abstrakt     Author presents the most frequent causes of dehydration, which precipitate severe conditions in small children much sooner than in adult patients. Different types and clinical signs of dehydration are described, which every nurse should be familiar with in order to be able to detect and evaluate dehydration as well as to offer nursing care to a dehydrated child. The importance of skill for monitoring of child's general condition, clinical signs of the disease, supervision of the intravenous line in infusion therapy, as well as accurate registering of fluid intake and clearance, and last but not least, persistent effort for oral hydration is pointed out. The role of nurse in health education of parents is considered important as well, for it is the nurse who can present to parents in a suitable way some facts about the child's disease they might not have been familiar with, and thus stimulate them for a better co-operation with the medical care team.
