Abstrakt     Erythema migrans is the most frequent clinical manifestation of early Lyme borreliosis. Infection may be restricted to the skin, it may be accompanied by the haematogenic spread of B. burgdorferi sensu lato or by other manifestations of the disease such as neurologic, cardiac or joint involvement. The published data concerning the presence of bacteria B. burgdorferi sensu lato in the blood of the patients with erythema migrans and it's influence on the clinical course and / or the outcome of the disease has been inconclusive. The study was conducted in order to establish the frequency of the presence of bacteria B. burgdorferi sensu lato in the blood of the children with solitary erythema migrans, to determine the strains of the isolated borreliae, to žompare the clinical course and the outcome of the disease in patients in whom bacteria B. burgdorferi sensu lato was present in the blood with patients where bacteria was absent from blood, to establish whether bacteria B. burgdorferi sensu lato was present in the blood of the children with multiple erythema migrans more often compared to those with solitary erythema migrans and whether the possible new findings about Lyme borreliosis could influence the selection of the initial treatment of the children with erythema migrans. The prospective study included 377 patients younger than 15 years with erythema migrans treated at the Department of Infectious Diseases in Ljubljana between 1996 and 1999, from whom, prior to the administration of antibiotic therapy, blood was taken for blood culturing for bacteria B. burgdorferi sensu lato. Basic demographic and clinical data were collected with a questionnaire. The presence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato in the blood was determined by microbiological investigations with bacteria isolation. Isolated borreliae were typified according to large restriction fragment pattern analysis. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
