Abstrakt     Influence of some genetic and environmental factors on the onset of menarche were investigated in a sample of 325 secondary schoolgirls from Velenje. Information on menarcheal age was obtained by retrospective method in the schoolyear 1998/99. Their mothers, grandmothers and sisters were also included in order to observe the genetic influence and the secular trend towards earlier maturation. Mean menarcheal age of girls from Velenje is higher in comparison with the other Slovenian recent studies. We found out that the mother's education is one of the most important environmental factors corresponding to an earlier onset of menarche. Generational comparison indicates a progressive decrease of the age of menarche. The highest correlation in the age at menarche was found between the daughters and their mothers. Relatively high correlation was found also between the examinees and the mothers' mothers. Correlations between the inquired girls and their sisters and the inguired girls and the father's mothers were considerable lower.
