Abstrakt		Essential oils are mixtures of easily evaporable compounds, mostly including two groups of compounds: terpenoids and phenylpropanes. They are secondary metabolites, which means that a plant does not need these substances for mere survival, but when it does have them its competitive advantage over other species in the ecosystem is significantly increased. They are found practically exclusively in higher plants. It is estimated that over 17,000 species of higher plants contain essential oils. They can be found in different glands on the surface of plants or in variously-shaped gland cavities and channels within plant tissue. The contents of essential oil differ greatly among individual drugs, but most of them contain several percent.
