Abstrakt     Introduction. Considering that human papilloma virus (HPV) is often associated with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer, the theory was developed that the infection with HPV is involved with cervical cancer and that HPV seems to be the main aetiological cause for CIN and cervical cancer. Nowadays more than 80 HPV types are known, but the most important ones are considered to be type HPV 16 and 18, most often accompanied by CIN and cervical cancer. Aims. The first aim of our study was to examine if infections with HPV 16 and 18 in women with CIN appear more often than in women without CIN. The second purpose was to find the relationship between the frequency of cytomorphological changes which relate to HPV infection and in situ hibridisation (ISH) positive test. The third aim was to establish whethere there is a connection between HPV 16 and 18, and other risk factors. (age, number of births, number of abortions, age at first sexual intercourse, number of sexual partners, durtion of oral contraceptive use, smoking, socioeconomic characteristics). Methods. HPV 16 and 18 were determined by the ISH method in cervical smears of 104 women treated by conization for CIN. Before the operation, a specimen for ISH had been taken from each patient. The control group consisted of 100 women without CIN cytological results and without cytomorphological effect of HPV, who came as healthy women for regular check-ups to the gynaecological clinic. Material for ISH was taken also from respondents of the control group. For collection of basic epidemiological and gynaecological-maternity data the appropriate questionnaire was used. The X2 and Mann-Whitney test were used for statistical analysis of collected data. Results. In the group of 104 patients with CIN, ISH revealed HPV 16 in 24 (23.1%), HPV 18 in 8 (7.7%), and HPV 16 and/or 18 and 29 (28%) patients. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
