Abstrakt     BACKGROUND Spontaneous abortion is the most common complication of pregnancy and a great risk factor for the next pregnancy outcome. There are different causes for spontaneous abortions, frequently unknown and impossible to find. But some very likely causes can be detected with different diagnostic procedures. Among them are morphological abnormalities of uterus and ovaries, which can be deteced with the vaginal ultrasound (US). AIM The aim of this study was to find the US-detectable morphological abnormalities of uterus and ovaries among women with early spontaneous abortions and to establish the frequency of these anomalies. HYPOTHESIS We hypothesized the following: Morphological abnormalities of uterus and ovaries as a risk factor for spontaneous abortions are more frequent than we think. Not just polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but also polycystic ovaries (PCO) are possible cause for the spontaneous abortions. Among women with congenital uterine malformations (CUM) also PCO are found frequently. METHODS In the retrospective study we enrolled 71 women with the clinically confirmed early spontaneous abortions. First we collected some data by taking the history and from the enclosed documents, then we examined the women with the vaginal US. For the detection of all morphological abnormalities we used a 7-MHz vaginal ultrasound probe Bruel and Kjaer. The data were statistically evaluated using the analysis of Chi-square test and some data were expressed by the odds-ratio. Among 71 investigated women, 23 (32,4%) had normal US-findings and 48 (67,6%) had pathological ones. Among the morphological abnormalities of uterus, 30 (42,3%) had minor or major CUM and 7 (9,9%) had uterine fibroids. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
