Abstrakt     The collection of data and the assessment of drug use at the individual, family and community levels should be an essential component of treatment. This article provides basic information on terminology and definitions as well as data collection methods. Good information is part of good planning, implementation and evaluation of prevention and treatment programs. Changes in the use of drugs can be monitored. On the individual level the questionnaire entitled "Evidence Regarding the Treatment of the Drug User" can be used to collect data. Four main approaches are used to obtain data at thecommunity level: collating existing information, interviewing key informants, participant observation and population surveys. In using all of these approaches, it is essential for health workers to realize both the benefits and the limitations of the methods.
