Abstrakt | Background: Elevated blood pressure and total blood cholesterol are major risk factors for coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death in the developed countries. Despite new scientific evidence about the importance of regulating blood pressure and total cholesterol, many surveys that were performed showed high prevalence of arterial hypertension and hypercholesterolemia in coronary patients. Aim of study: To provide the data about prevalence of arterial hypertension and hypercholesterolemia in Slovenian coronary patients, and their treatment; to compare secondary prevention measures between patients with different types of coronary heart disease; to find out possible differences in secondary prevention between both sexes; to fmd out the aplication of secondary prevention in coronary patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: We included 648 patients, aged 70 years or less, who were divided into diffrent groups regarding the type of event (coronary artery by-pass grafting, baloon dilatation of coronary arteries, acute myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris), regarding the gender and regarding the presence or absence of diabetes mellitus. The data were gathered with questionnaire, clinical examination and analyses of blood samples. Results: To invitation responded 445 patients (116 after coronary artery by-pass grafting, 109 after baloon dilatation of coronary arteries, 118 after acute myocardial infarction, 102 with unstable angina pectoris), 331 (74%) of them were men, 141 (32%) had diabetes mellitus. 62% of patients had blood pressure >= 140/90 mmHg, 68% of patients had total cholesterol >= 5,0 mmol/1.
