Abstrakt | Background. Arterial hypertension is a frequent risk factor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The majority of patients with essential arterial hypertension is treated by general practitioners, who follow the recommendations of the Slovene guidelines for the management of hypertensive patients, which advocate also the annual examinations of the eye ground. This master work aims at examining several points: firstly, whether the entire minimal diagnostic programme could be carried out in the general practitioner's surgery; secondly, the possible association between the eye ground changes and cardiovascular risk; and thirdly, the proportion of hypertensive patients having the target blood pressure below 130/85. Methods. Cross-sectional study involved 100 subjects divided into two groups. The first consisted of treated hypertensive patients with essential arterial hypertension, while the control group involved the subjects with normal blood pressure. Each group was comprised of 50 subjects without diabetes, cataract or high occular pressure. The age range was from 40 to 69 years. The minimal diagnostic programme was performed on all the subjects, following the Slovene guidelines for management of hypertensive patients. The eye ground examination was performed according to the method of direct ophthalmoscopy. Cardiovascular risk was assessed not only according to the tables of the European Society of Cardiology but also according to the tables for hypertensive patients, following the guidelines. Results. The total minimal diagnostic programme eas perfomed on only 11 (22%) of the hypertensive patients. The least frequently performed part of the observations has been the eye ground examination. The eye ground changes have been found in 42% of the hypertensive patients and in 20% of the copntrpl group subjects. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters). | |
