Abstrakt | Background: The recommended number of daily meals is three to five. We wanted to establish the number of meals, daily consumed by secondary school pupils from Ljubljana, and connections with nutritional and other habits and bad habits, demographic and socio-economic characteristics of secondary school pupils and their body mass index. Methods: In 1999, an intersection epidemiologic study was performed on a proportional sample of 296 pupils attending the third class of Ljubljana secondary schools. Students were on average 18 years old. Based on an opinion pool, the nutritional habits of secondary school students, some of their other habits, bad habits, characteristics and knowledge on healthy foods was evaluated. The quality of daily meals was evaluated with the 24-hour dietary recall method. The body mass index was calculated on the basis of measured body height and body mass values. The hi-quadrat test, t-test, variance analysis and the multivariant linear regression method have been used for the analysis. Results: On average, pupils consume approximately three meals per day (boys three and a half, girls less than three). Pupils on the average do not consume enough milk and dairy products, fruits and vegetables. They have irregular meal pattern, mostly they are abandoning breakfast and supper. Nutrition of girls is poorer, as they eat characteristically less milk and dairy products, fish, eggs meat and meat products, less warm meals, they less frequently eat supper and less regularly consume all three daily meals. At the same time they are less satisfied with their body (nearly two thirds of them wish to be slimmer) and are less frequently active in sports. Besides that BMI of girls is lower compared to boys.
